What are sexually transmitted Infections (STls)?
Sexually transmitted infections are infections or conditions transmitted through sexual contact, caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites. STls sometimes are regarded as STDs. The most common types of sexually transmitted infections include chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV), syphilis, and HIV. Many of these STDs do not show symptoms for a long time. Even without symptoms, they can still be harmful and passed on during sex.
What is the difference between STI and STDs?
Essentially, the difference is between a disease and an infection. Not all diseases begin with infections, but many do. Sexually transmitted disease first begin as sexually transmitted infections. Infection occurs with the sexually transmitted bacteria or virus first enters the body and begins multiplying. The infection may progress into a disease. Disease occurs when this foreign presence officially disrupts the body’s normal functions and processes.
What are the common STls?
STDs are common, especially among young people. There are about 26 million new cases of STDs each year. In Nigeria, the common STls are

How would I know if I have an STI?
Not all STls have symptoms, in fact, a couple of STls do not cause any symptoms particularly in men. The only way to know for sure if you have an STD is to get tested. You can get an STD from having sex with someone who has no symptoms. Just like you, that person might not even know he or she has an STD. However, If you do have symptoms, they may appear around your genital region and could include
- Burning sensation around your genitals
- Bumps, sores or warts on or near your penis, vagina, mouth or anus.
- Swelling or severe itching near your penis or vagina.
- Discharge from your penis.
- Vaginal discharge that has a bad odor, causes irritation or is a different color or amount than usual.
- Vaginal bleeding that's not your period.
- Painful sex.
- Painful urination or frequent urination.
